Geosynthetics for landfill plant liner system
Modern landfills require Geosynthetics. Geosynthetics for landfill plant liner system is widely used at home and abroad. Today I will talk about the requirements of Geosynthetics for landfill plant anti-seepage system.

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, addressing the issue of municipal solid waste has become crucial, and constructing sanitary landfills for household garbage is the most effective method. Modern sanitary landfills comprise several key components, including composite liner systems, leachate collection and treatment systems, gas collection systems, and cover systems. Geosynthetic materials are essential for the proper functioning of the liner system.

Geosynthetic materials to be used in the landfill liner system

  1. Composite Geomembrane

  2. The geosynthetic membrane used in landfill liner systems must comply with the relevant provisions of the current national standard GJ/T234, and it should meet the following requirements:

    • Thickness should not be less than 1.5mm.

    • Width should not be less than 6.5m.

    • Appearance should meet specific criteria, such as no obvious sawtooth patterns at cut edges, no perforations, bubbles, impurities, or visible cracks.

  3. Geotextile

  4. Geotextiles used in landfill liner systems should meet the following requirements:

    • Geotextile selection should be based on the characteristics of the liner system and the environmental conditions of the landfill. Commonly used types include polypropylene short fiber geotextile, polyester long filament geotextile, and polyester short fiber geotextile.

    • Geotextile used as protective material for HDPE membrane should have a specification not less than 600g/m2.

    • Geotextile used for leachate collection and drainage layer should have a specification not less than 150g/m2.

    • Geotextile should have good aging resistance and UV resistance.

  5. Geosynthetic Clay Liner

  6. Sodium Bentonite Waterproof Blanket (GCL) Performance indicators for sodium bentonite waterproof blankets (GCL) in landfill liner projects should comply with national standards and meet specific requirements:

    • GCL should have a flat appearance, uniform thickness, no holes, fraying, or residual needles.

    • Unit area mass should not be less than 4800g/m2, with a minimum bentonite mass of 4500g/m2.

    • Bentonite volume swelling should not be less than 24ml/2g.

    • Peel strength should not be less than 65N/10cm.

    • Tensile strength should not be less than 800N/10cm.

    • Permeability coefficient should be less than 5×10-11m/S.

    • No leakage under a static water pressure of 0.6mPa/1h.

  7. Geocomposite Drainage Net

  8. Geocomposite drainage nets used in liner systems should meet the following requirements:

    • The geonet and geotextile in the geocomposite drainage net should be pre-bonded, with a bonding strength greater than 0.17KN/m.

    • HDPE material is recommended for the geocomposite drainage net, with longitudinal tensile strength greater than 8N/m and transverse tensile strength greater than 3KN/m.

    • The geotextile in the geocomposite drainage net should have a specification not less than 200g/m2.

    • Selection of drainage capacity should consider factors such as creep reduction, biological and chemical clogging reduction.

Application of Geosynthetic Materials in Leachate Liner Systems

  1. Liner System for Landfill Foundation

    • The liner system should prevent seepage to protect groundwater and surface water from contamination. It should withstand complex liner systems, and in areas with low groundwater, it can withstand single-layer liner systems. In geologically and environmentally demanding areas, the bottom of reservoirs should have a double-layer liner system.

    • The composite liner should be constructed with layers such as the reservoir bottom composite liner structure, groundwater flow layer, protective layer, HDPE geomembrane, sub-membrane protection layer, leachate drainage layer, and geotextile layer.

    • The slope composite liner structure should include layers such as the reservoir slope composite liner structure, groundwater flow layer, protective layer, HDPE geomembrane, upper protective layer, leachate drainage and buffer layer.

  2. Landfill Closure and Cover System

    • A complete closure and cover system must be established for landfill closure. The structure of the closure system should include layers such as the gas venting layer, impermeable layer, drainage layer, and vegetation layer.

    • The gas venting layer should consist of coarse-grained porous materials resistant to corrosion, with a thickness not less than 30cm and can be a geosynthetic composite drainage net with equivalent drainage performance.

    • The impermeable layer can be a composite impermeable layer consisting of a geomembrane and compacted clay or GCL. The geomembrane should be high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with a thickness not less than 1mm, and geotextile should be placed on both sides.

    • The drainage layer should have sufficient water drainage performance, with the top slope supporting coarse-grained material or geotextile drainage net and the slope supporting a composite drainage net.

    • The vegetation layer should consist of a nutrient vegetation layer and a support soil layer.
